WFMW: Canning with the FoodSaver

Like Shannon at Rocks In My Dryer, I can't take credit for this week's Works for Me Wednesday tip. And, also like Shannon, my tip involves glass jars. Some of you may use a vacuum sealer, such as a Foodsaver, to store food in glass jars. If you try to vacuum seal powdery substances, such as cake mixes or unflavored gelatin (which can be used as an egg substitute--wow...two tips in one post!), you could ruin your machine. According to a friend of mine who spoke with a representative of the Foodsaver manufacturer, you can simply place a napkin over the lid as you seal it to keep the powder from being sucked up into the machine. I haven't tested this myself, as my jar canning accessory is still en route via the USPS, but I can't wait to try it! Of course, you might want to verify this for yourself through your machine's customer service rep...I'm not in a position to replace broken Foodsavers if something doesn't work! :)

What a great idea! I know this may sound silly but I am terrified to try traditional canning methods because I am a notorious klutz. Right now I'm sporting 3 new battle scars from my cooking adventures in the past 2 months. I will definitely have to give this one a try! Thanks for posting on WFMW. I love all of the great tips I get just by visiting that site. :) Thanks again!

I just got my FoodSaver in the mail today, the deluxe one with the canister vacuum thingy. I saw you can use it on Mason jars, but somehow that didn't translate in my mind to canning. Will have to look into that!
